Open Letter by Caedmon’s Call

Caedmon’s Call is probably the smartest Christian band, lyrically speaking. It takes actual thought to figure out what they’re trying to say. With this song, I actually have no idea what they’re talking about. Jon thinks it’s a guy talking to a girl but that’s just because he’s obsessed with girls. I only took two excerpts because they are the only ones I can vaguely understand.

Just cuz we subscribe to two different paths
Doesn’t give you right to just sit and laugh
Can you still see from whence you come?
Cuz I won’t bow down to place alone

I suppose there are really very many ways to interpret this. The first and second lines are talking about how some people completely disrespect the religions or beliefs of other people. The world laughs at Christians and considers them optimistically stupid. We are considered fools and easily manipulated because we know that God has the power to do any and everything. I have yet to meet a single person though, who holds this belief and can actually back it up with anything of significance. People who don't even know what the Bible says or the facts that back up our faith dismiss our religion. I don't know. I guess I'm just tired of the whole Christians are dumb thing because I can back up my faith logically better than most people of the secualr world can. At the same time, we as Christians must be much more respectful towards other religions. For one thing, it's quite impossible to convert someone by telling them that their beliefs are laughable and silly. People of other beliefs would be offended as much as we would be. Respectfully learning about someone else's beliefs will help you to get them to listen to yours.

All of these things you say I lack you can keep
Just give my innocence back

I think I'll interpret this in terms of a Christian saying this to the world. The world tells us we should be chasing after certain things that we lack such as money, drugs, sex, etc. However, once enveloped in this world, one realizes how little it really satisfies. The writer is telling the world that it can keep its silly values and how he simply wants to go back to the pure days of Godliness.
